An oud. This is a pear-shaped instrument with 11 strings, tuned in 5 pairs with one string as a “drone”.

A
The doumbek (a goblet-shaped drum) is played with a light touch and create the rhythm.

A
Melodies are based off of maqams which are a system of melody modes/ scales

A
All modes use the same notes of a major scale but just start on different notes.
