Paleomagnetism Flashcards
What is a Magnetic Force Field
The region around a magnetic object in which it’s magnetic forces act on other magnetic objects
How does a Magnetic Field interact with a bar magnet?
The North pole attracts the south poles of magnetic objects within the field, and the South pole attracts the north pole of magnetic objects.
How is a magnetic field Orientated
Parallel to the magnetic axis at the midpoint of the magnet, and curves toward the poles at either end.
Where is a magnetic field strongest?
At the poles.
Where is a magnetic field weakest?
At the midpoint.
How is earth’s magnetic field generated?
By the convective motion of the fluid outer core around the solid inner core.
Define Geodynamo:
The conversion of mechanical energy (caused by convection of metals to electrical energy within the earth. This creates the magnetic field.
Is Earth’s magnetic field stable?
No, magnetic fields produced by fluid motion is unstable and not as uniform as something like a bar magnet.
Where are earth’s magnetic north and south pole located.
The magnetic north pole is located at the physical south pole, and the magnetic south pole is located at the physical north pole.
Are the magnetic poles uniform in location?
No, they gradually move due to secular variation.
What is Magnetic Declination?
The angle of the magnetic pole.
