Palentology Unit Flashcards
Binocular vision
3D vision
Explain what it means to be a primate.
You have to have binocular vision and opposable thumbs
Opposable thumbs
You can grasp things and move your thumb freely
Grasping hands
You can move each finger individually
What is the benefit of binocular vision
You can see thing in front of you, usually Predators
What are the two subgroups of primates? Describe their characteristics.
Prosimians are usually nocturnal,lower intelligence.
Anthropoids are considered the higher primates, they are smarter, have more complex brains and have flatter faces.
What is the difference between humans and other primates?
Humans are bipedal which means they can walk on two limbs straight up.
Bipedal
Walking primarily upright on two feet
What is hominid? Examples ?
A hominid is a type of primate characterized by bipedalism, relatively Long lower limbs and lack of a tail. Neanderthals and modern humans
What is the difference between the genus Australopithecus and homo?
Australopithecus are shorter have smaller brains and they were the first bipedal primates
Homo are larger and have larger brains, they are completely bipedal
Skeletal structure of Australopithecines and modern hominids
A- slender bodies, the had human like jaws, and teeth smaller skull
M- larger teeth and skeletal structure
