Ecology Flashcards
What is a biotic factor?
Living things in an environment, such as a animals, plants, trees, and humans
What is ecology ?
The study of the environment
What is an abiotic factor ?
Things that are nonliving- rocks air soil
Organism
Single animals plant or single celled life form
Population
All organisms of a single species that live within a certain area
Community
All of the different organisms that live within an area with abiotic and biotic factors
Ecosystem
Living things and community/ habitat. Interaction of biotic and abiotic factors
Biodiversity
A number of variety of living things in an environment, climate, temp , and it’s can lead to extinction and endangerment
How does population growth occur?
When the birth rate is larger than the death rate
What are limiting factorsv
Something that limits the growth of a population such as natural disasters, small amount of resources, disease
What is the carrying capacity ?
The largest population that a given environment can support
What is pollution?
When harmful substances are released into the air, water, and or soil. It can cause lung problems, ozone depletion, global warming and green house gases
What is the ozone layer?
A layer of the earth that protects the earth from the harmful u.v rays from the sun. Pollution is destroying it p
What is the green house effect ?
They trap and emit heat radiation back to earth.
Ex: co2
What causes acid rain?
Sulfuric aid and nitric acid emitted from nuclear power plants and cars
