Large Indus river flows through the country and a large percentage of the land is on the floodplain.
Short term responses
International fund raising effort to help offer relief.
Aid organisations sent helicopters and boats (150) to help rescue people who were trapped.
Temporary housing/shelter was constructed for the homeless.
Food and water supplies were shipped to Pakistan, following aid donations of £60 million from the UK.
Long term responses
Minimal long term responses due to a lack of financial security.
Effects
1600 people killed.
14 million made homeless.
Total of 20 million impacted in some way.
Loss of crops and livestock leading to long term food shortages.
Spread of disease as many people had no access to clean water.
20% of the land area in Pakistan was flooded.
