Pain Sensation Flashcards
Where are pain sensations elicited?
Nociceptors
What are the two types of nociceptors known as? How are they different from each other?
A-delta group (myelinated) : conduction rate - 5 to 30m/s. Respond to Heat and mechanical stimuli C-fiber group (unmyelinated) : conduction rate less than 2m/s. Responds to thermal, mechanical and chemical stimuli
What are the two main categories of Pain perception?
First pain which is sharp in the beginning, short-lived and followed by second pain which is prolonged, slower and diffused.
What is the threshold for perceiving thermal stimuli as noxious?
43°C (110°F)
What is the role of transient receptor potential?
sensitivity to a range of thermal stimuli (hot to cold)
How is Capsaicin used in clinical settings?
It is used as an anti inflammatory agent and analgesic in pain relief sprays and cream
How are Central Pain pathways different from Mechanosensory pathways?
anterolateral system conveys pain information while
the dorsal column–medial lemniscal system conveys mechanosensory information.
Where do the first and second order neurons end?
The first order neurons end at the dorsal horn of Spinal Cord and the second order neurons terminate in brain stem and thalamus.
What happens after a unilateral lesion in the spinal cord
Dissociated sensory loss in ipsilateral side (loss of touch, pressure, vibration and proprioception) and contralateral side (Loss of temperature and pain sensation) of the body.
What are the two aspects of pain sensation and How are they mediated?
Sensory - discriminative aspect of first pain is mediated through the spinothalamic tract and affective-motivational aspect of second pain is mediated through complex pathways towards limbic system.
