Pain Medications Flashcards
1
Q
non-opioid pain medications
A
- acetaminophens
- NSAIDs
- salicylates
- selective COX-2 inhibitors
2
Q
acetaminophen
A
- to treat fever at hypothalamus
- causes dilation of peripheral blood vessels to enable dissipation of heat through sweat
- used to treat fever and relieve pain
- adverse effects uncommon but OD possible
3
Q
salicylates
A
- acts as anticoagulant, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic
- adverse effects: GI distress, bleeding
- may increase effects of PO hypoglycemics
- do not give to children (raise syndrome)
4
Q
NSAIDs
A
- inhibits cyclooxyrgenase and prevent formation of prostaglandins
- used for mild-moderate pain and to reduce inflammation
- adverse effects: GI upset, acute renal failure
5
Q
selective COX-2 inhibitors
A
- similar mechanism as NSAIDs
- used to relieve pain, fever, inflammation
- adverse effects mild and GI related
6
Q
classification of opioids
A
- opioid agonist with moderate efficacy
- opioid agonist with high efficacy
- opioid with mixed agonist/antagonist effects
- opioid antagonists
