fear: emotional response about a specific, identifiable situation, event, or person that is a perceived threat (e.g. heights, needles and drills)
Anxiety: a general stat of nervousness, a type of stress (may or may not know)
Pain: a subjective feeling or extreme discomfort

types of Fear:
Normal and Neurotic

highly subjective fear that is disproportionate to the threat=phobia (over exaggeration)

the person believes that they can do something to shorten or lessen the event

a mental lessening of adverse situations (control negative thoughts or redirecting their consciousness)
information control
information communicated to the patient gives a feeling of control
signs of anxiety or fear
Verbal indicators: talk too much or too radily talking loud talking too little inappropriate jokes
signs of anxiety of fear
behavioral indicators: nervous laughter inappropriate smiles voice cracking trembling hand gripping edge of chair broken appointments lateness

physiological indicators: dilated pupils white knuckles increased heart rate perspiration on hands, forehead, etc. redness in neck dry mouth uneven breathing

drug usage to reduce anxiety
advantages:
most widely used method of helping patients cope with fear and anxiety
quick, easy, effective in reducing mild or moderate anxiety
disadvantages:
little carryover for future anxiety
severely anxious people are resistant to analgesics and sedative drugs
