what is the gold standard assessment for pain?
self reported outcomes eg NRS, questionnaires etc
what are the different time courses of pain?
acute - less than 6 weeks
-subacute -6-12 weeks
-chronic - more than 3 months
how can we measure the severity of pain?
NRS - numerical rating scale (on a scale of 0-10, 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain imaginable)
VAS - visual analogue scale
-pain drawings
-McGill pain questionnaire (asks people to choose words from a series of lists)
what are examples of other pain questionnaires we could give to the patient?
-fear avoidance belief questionnaire
-quality of life questionaires
-coping strategies questionnaire

what is quantitative sensory testing?
a psychophysical (physical test that involves a psychological component) method used to quantify somatosensory nerve function in both healthy subjects and patients with neuropathic pain
what is an example of quantitative sensory testing?
pressure pain threshold - measured with pressure algometer
how can we assess or what tools are there for drivers/domains of chronic pain - biologically?
-diagnostic imaging
-physical exam - AROM, muscle ax (strength, endurance, length, control), PPIVMs, PAIVMs, neuro exam etc
-central sensitisation inventory
-pain sensitisation assessment
what tools are there to assess psycho factors of pain?
-HADS- hospital anxiety depression scale
-fear of movement eg Tampa scale for kinesiophobia
-beliefs and attitudes questionnaire
what are example of tools we can use to assess social domains or drivers of chronic pain?
-work status
-sports status
