Pain and Temperature Flashcards
What is haptic perception?
The exploration of objects through touch, most often by the hand or fingers
Are temperature and nociception fast or slow?
Slow
What receptor do we use to sense temperature, that is also sensitive to pain, and how does it work?
TrypV1 located in the membrane of cells. When the cell is poked, thousands of cells are broken up and releases different molecules that bind to the TrypV1 receptor, causing a conformational change, which activates the cell and sends the signal to the brain
What are the fast, medium, and slow types of nerve fibers?
A-beta fibers: fast and thick, covered in myelin (less resistance, high conductance)
A-delta: smaller in diameter, less myelin
C fibers: small diameter, unmyelinated (lingering sense of pain)
How can spice change conformation as well?
Capsacin binds the TrypV1 receptor in your tongue and triggers the same response
