Pain Flashcards
What Detects Pain?
Nociceptors
What is pain
An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage
First Pain
First pain: sharp Aδ fibers
Second pain
: delayed, diffuse, and longer-lasting C fibers
dorsolateral tract of Lissauer
cross the midline
and then ascend towards the brainstem
and thalamus
Lateral spinothalamic tract-
this carries most of the pain
and temperature
information
Anterior spinothalamic tract
carries some crude touch
information
Anterolateral crossing
axons cross the
midline when they are leaving the
spinal cord
Dorsal column-medial lemniscus crossings
medulla
Dorsal column-medial lemniscus:
general somatosensory
information
First pain in the brain
ventral posterior lateral (VPL) nucleus-> Pain information relayed to primary and secondary somatosensory cortices
Second pain: affective-motivational in the brain
Reticular formation: alerting and
threat area
* Periaqueductal gray: contains
enkephalin-producing cells which can
help suppress pain
* Superior Colliculus: avoidance and
defensive behaviors
hyperalgesia
Sensitization
peripheral sensitization
inflammatory soup, Probably to help you protect the damaged area until it is healed
central sensitization
Increased excitability of neurons in the dorsal horn after a period of high
pain transmission
