an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage
what is the Biomedical model of pain?
single cause - pain caused by tissue damage
- no causal influence of psyche
what is the specificity theory?
Existence of specific pain fibres and pain pathways
- pain experience equal to degree of tissue damage/injury
Explain the Gate Control Theory
pain perception through physiological and psychological pain
- pain depends on extent to which a ‘gate’ opens (PAIN) & closes (LITTLE OR NO PAIN);
multiple causal factors unlike biomedical
what is phantom limb pain?
feeling pain in amputated limb with pain worsening after amputation - not everyone feels this pain
