what is pain
Unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or perceived pain
Pathophysiology of pain
Nociceptors - detection of sensation
Interneurons - impulses from sensory to motor neurons
Anterolateral Spinothlamatic tract - pathway from spinal cord to thalamus
Types of pain
Nociceptive - Common
Neuropathic - burning or numbness
Psychogenic - no underlying cause
Sources of pain
Visceral - comes and goes
Parietal - constant
Acute - short term
Chronic - lasting 3 months or more

- OPQRST
- Abbey pain - dementia patients
- FLACC - face, legs, activity, cry, consolibility
- Face picture - non verbal patients
Signs and symptoms of unresolved pain
Certain positions
Difficulty or discomfort
Unable to sleep
Guarding or stiffness
Non-pharmacological management
RICE
Rest and reassurance
Massage
Physiotherpy
Accupuncture
Compression
