Paige's SLP653 Final Flashcards
What is the importance of appropriate stimuli selection?
- variables that can affect ability to repeat
- single syllable (love) VS multisyllabic (microscopic)
- what semantic category it belongs to
- low VS high frequency words
- initial phoneme
Naming Errors Response Types
HARMONICA
- empty circumlocutions: “I know what that is”
- Semantic Circumlocutions: “you blow it”
- Semantic paraphasia: “flute”
- Phonetic paraphasia: “Karmonica”
- Neologism: “parakodim”
- Visual Perception naming error: “double decker bus”
- Perseveration
What is apraxia of speech?
- motor planning programming deficit
- common in Broca’s
what are the characteristics of Apraxia?
- consonant and vowel distortions
- slow overall rate
- distorted anticipatory substitutions
- errors of stress
- effortful, visible, audible articulation posture
What is common in Perseveration and aphasia
-common in aphasia
-severity correlated with aphasia severity
3 types:
-stuck in set
-continuous perseveration
-recurrent perseveration
What is stuck in set (Perseveration)?
inappropriate maintenance of a category or framework of responses after the introduction of a new task
What is continuous perseveration?
inappropriate prolongation or continuation of behaviors without an intervening response stimulus
What is recurrent perseveration?
-inappropriate recurrence of a previous response following presentation of a new stimulus
AAC Devices
when determining which AAC is appropriate for each patient one needs to obtain thorough information on the needs and capabilities of the certain individual
High tech AAC Device
- tobii dynavox
- linagraphica
- GoTalk
Low tech AAC device
- picture icons
- communication boards
- communication notebook
Super low tech AAC
- facial expressions/ gestures
- writing/ drawing
- pointing
Why is Group Therapy important with aphasia population?
- people with aphasia can practice and use the communication skills used in therapy in a more functional and relevant way while also receiving emotional and psychological support through shared experience
- groups are supportive in that everyone understand aphasia
- turn taking
- practicing communication
- interacting with communicative partners
Assessment of apraxia of speech
Apraxia Battery for Adults - 2
ABA -2
What is an assessment for aphasia?
- The Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE)
- Western Aphasia Battery (WAB)
What is Response Elaboration therapy (RET)?
Purpose:
1. Uses set of pictures to record responses
2. Clinician helps shape responses
3. Content words: nouns, verbs, pronouns
4. WH questions used to expand repsonse
Target:
increase number of content words in spontaneous speech
What is voluntary Control of Involuntary Utterances (VCIU)?
Purpose
- Create a master list of real words in index cards that the patient has uttered w/o struggle. The goal is 100.
- The patient is asked to read one word at a time.
- Pic respresentation be drawn on back of index card.
- use word in developed conversational topics
Target:
improving verbal expression
What is verb network strengthening Treatment (VNEST)?
Focuses on verbs, encouraging participants to think of people who perform the actions (known as agents) and the actions/people the actions are performed on. The idea is that by using verbs which require connections to nouns, strength in all the words around the verb will happen; answering WH question is also part of this technique
What is phonological components analysis (PCA)?
Word Finding tx that helps a person learn to analyze the sound in words
What is Treatment of Wernicke’s Aphasia?
Purpose:
For pt with ability to read words. Pt is given a word to read. Card is flipped over. Pt is asked to repeat the word and look for the picture corresponding to the spoken word.
Target:
improving auditory comprehension
What is Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT)?
Evidence based approach that uses singing to improve expressive lang. in PWA by slowing the rate of articulation and continuous voicing may reduce dependence on left hemisphere.
What is cognitive approach to improving auditory comprehension (CAIAC)?
Purpose:
Pt w/ mod-severe auditory comprehension. Need to have relatively intact visual perception and graphomotor skills
Target:
improving auditory comprehension
What is Visual Action Therapy (VAT)?
Purpose:
Designed to train individuals with severe aphasia and ideomotor apraxia to produce representational gestures for purposes of functional communication.
Target:
Improving non-verbal expression
