research methodology

A

used young men who applied to 1470 real jobs in New York City over ten months in the year 2004. All of the testers were well spoken college graduates who were controlled for age and height. Additionally they all had similar verbal skills, interactional styles, and physical attractiveness. All testers went through a common training program to ensure similar styles of self-presentation. Testers were matched with fake resumes with comparable education and experience.

Research findings

A

. Results found that race of the applicant played a strong role with whites in first followed by Latinos and blacks trailing far behind. often even whites with felonies were hired more often then blacks and latinos

either beign moved from a position where there is contact with customers to a job in which there is no contact, a move from a white collar position to a manual position, or a move within a clear hierarchy.

Race coded channeling

A

Black applicants were guided into lower positions 10 cases and never upwards, Hispanics were guided into lower positions in 4 cases and never upwards, and whites were only guided downwards 4 times and all of those were in cases of a criminal record.
