Page 3 Flashcards
What were you then told to do?
To detach my hands, bow my head, and intoken of my sincerity, kiss the holy bible upon which I had been obligated.
From what were you then released?
From the cable-tow, I being bound to the fraternity by a stronger tie.
What was then ask you?
Being in condition of darkness, what I most desire.
Your answer?
Light
Did you receive it?
I did, by order of the worshipful master with the assistance of the brother.
What were the first objects presented to your view on being brought from
darkness?
The three great lights of Masonry, the holy bible, square, and compass.
The holy bible is given to us as the rule and guide of our faith;
the square to square our actions,
and the compass to circumscribe our desire and keep our passion within due bounds toward all mankind.
This I was enabled to observe by aid of three lesser lights, representing the sun, moon, and master of the lodge and were thus explained.
As the sun rules the day and the moon governs the night, so should the Worshipful master endevour with equal regularity, to rule and govern the lodge over which he is called to preside.
What did you next observe?
The worshipful master approaching me from the east, under the due guard and sign of an entered apprentice mason.
He presented to me his right hand, in token of friendship and brotherly love, invested me with the grip and word of this degree.
Bade me arise, go and salute the Junior and Senior Warden as an entered apprentice mason.
What was then presented to you?
A Lamb Skin Apron. It is an emblem of innocence, and the badge of a Mason.
More ancient than the golden fleece or the Roman eagle;
more honorable than the Star, or Garter,
or any distinction that can be conferred upon you, at this or any future period,
by King, Prince, Potentate, or any other person,
and which it is hoped that you will wear with pleasure to yourself and honor to the Fraternity.
What was then done with you?
I was reconducted to the Senior Warden in the West, who taught me to wear my Apron as an Entered Apprentice Mason.
How do Entered Apprentice wear their Apron?
With the top turn up to protect their clothing from being soiled.
What was then done with you?
I was reconducted to the Worshipful master in the East who presented to
me the working tools of this degree.
What are the working tools of this degree? (Ronny & Z)
The twenty four inch gauge and the common gavel.
The twenty four inch gauge is an instrument made use of by operative masons to measure and lay out their work.
But we, as free and accepted masons, are taught to make use of it for the noble and glorious purpose of dividing our time.
It being divided into twenty four equal parts is emblematic of the twenty four hours of the day, which we are taught to divide into three parts
Whereby we find a part for the service of God and a distressed, worthy brother, a part for our usual vocations, and a part for refreshment and repose.
The common gavel is an instrument used by operative masons to break off the rough and superfluous parts of stones, the better to fit them for the builder’s use.
But we, as free and accepted masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of divesting our hearts and consciences of all the vices and superfluities of life
Thereby fitting our minds as living stones, for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heaven
