What is the first stage of labor?
interval btwn onset of labor and full cervical dilatation
Define the second stage of labor:
interval btwn full cervical dilatation and delivery of infant
What is the third stage of normal labor?
period btwn delivery of infant and delivery of placenta
What is the difference between threatened and inevitable abortion?
threatened - 1st trimester bleeding with cervix closed
inevitable - bleeding with cervical dilation (POC have not yet passed)
Define incomplete abortion:
passage of some but not all of the POC from the uterine cavity
Complete abortion?
all POC have passed and cervix is closed; slight bleeding and cramping may cont. for several weeks
Missed abortion?
pregnancy that is retained in uterus after embryonic/fetal demise; some bleeding may be present, but cervix is closed and POC are in situ
Septic abortion?
embryonic/fetal demise has occurred and intrauterine infection has developed - risk of becoming systemic
Define recurrent abortion:
> 3 consecutive pregnancy losses before 20 weeks gestation
Define ectopic pregnancy:
pregnancy implanted outside endometrial cavity (most often in fallopian tube)
