PAG02 = DISSECTION Flashcards
What is health and safety for dissection?
take care with sharp instruments
Wear non-latex gloves to protect hands
● Wear goggles to protect eyes from harmful chemicals
● Wear an apron
● Dispose of waste responsibly and safely
How do you do an external examination dissection of the kidney?
- Look at the outside of the kidney – renal capsule.
- Beneath the renal capsule is the cortex.
- Part of the kidney is indented – this is the renal hilum.
- The tubes are the renal vein, renal artery and the ureter.
- Draw an annotated scientific diagram of the outside
How do you differentiate from the artery, vein and ureter?
The wall of the artery is
thicker than the wall of the vein. The ureter is likely to have the most adipose (fatty)
tissue around it.
How do you do an internal examination dissection of the kidney?
Cut the kidney in half lengthways from one side. Split it open and have a look at the
structures inside.
What structures would you see?
cortex, medulla (renal pyramids), renal columns, renal calyces, renal pelvis
How does the cortex appear?
dense and grainy and is a lighter shade than the medulla.
What are in the medulla?
many cone-shaped structures – these are renal
pyramids
How do renal pyramids appear?
appear stripy because they contain straight sections of the nephrons
(loops of Henle and collecting ducts).
What are in between pyramids?
Renal collumns
What are renal calyees?
Hollow cavities may be visible leading from the base of the renal pyramids
These lead to a larger hollow structure called the renal pelvis, which connects to the
ureter.
