What is an unlicensed medication?
A medication with no UK license
What is an off label medication?
One that is used outside of its license - e.g. different indication, dose of frequency
What is diarrhoea?
More than 3 stools per day
How does loperamide work?
Slows intestinal motility
Management of GORD in children
Reassurance, gaviscon initially then add ranitidine
Symptoms of coeliac disease
Diarrhoea, pale stools, abdominal bloating, growth failure, anaemia, often asymptomatic
Diagnosis of coeliac disease
Endoscopy with duodenal biopsy
TTG >10x normal
Anti-endomysial antibodies
Histology findings of coeliac disease
Crypt hyperplasia with flattening of villi
What is a raised faecal calprotectin associated with?
Associated with inflammatory bowel disease
What is constipation?
Less than 3 stools per week
Name 2 stool softeners
Movicol, Lactulose
Name two stimulants
Docusate
Senna
(docusate may be useful for older children as it is a softener AND a stimulant and available in tablet form)
skips, oedema, inflammation, cryptitis and abscesses, 30% of patients have granulomas
Crohn’s
polymorph nuclear leucocytes near base of crypts, crypt abscesses, no granulomas
