What is a common mimic for thoracic pathology in kids <5yo?

A

The thymus
- can be very large at times post infection, potentially mimicking a large pneumonia taking up an entire upper lobe (particularly on the Right upper lobe)
- Becomes much small after 5yo
- Ultrasound can differentiate from other structures

  • Worsening prognosis with higher grade, high grade at risk of growth arrest from physeal failure
  • Normal fracture complications (nerve injury, vascular injury, compartment syndrome
  • Complex regional pain syndrome aka reflexsympathetic dystrophy
