What antibiotics do you give to Neonates?
In the neonatal unit - Penicillin & Gentamicin
In the paed ward - Cefotaxime & Amoxicillin
Either is correct, it’s just a convention on what they use
What’s age are you likely to see malrotation vs intusseusception?
Malrotation in weeks or months olds
Intussuseption 9months to a couple years
What fluids do you give kids as resus and maintenance?
Resus - 9% saline
Maintenance - 9% NaCl + 5% dextrose + K
Define a low (etc) Birth weight?
Low Bw <2.5Kg
Very low Bw <1.5Kg
Extremely low Bw <1Kg
Define premature?
<37wks gestation
Extremely Preterm = <28wks
What could you test to determine the cause of an afebrile seizure?
- Glc for hypoglycaemia
- ECG for Long QT or other arrhythmia
- EEG (helps in diagnosing epilepsy)
List 5 differences between a child vs an adult re respiratory disease?
Children have:
- High chest wall compliance
- Lower SVR
- Lower surface area for air-tissue interface
- Higher Surface area-weight ratio
- Fewer Type 1 respiratory fibres
