What organism causes scarlet fever?
Group A strep - strep pyogenes.
What organism causes slapped cheek?
Parvovirus B19
Name a complication of tonsillitis.
Peritonsilar abscess/quinsy - needs hospital admission, IV antibiotics and drainage.
Which antibiotics are given for tonsillitis? Which score is used to determine whether antibiotics are needed?
Phenoxymethylpenicillin.
FEVERPain score - if 2 or 3 give delayed prescription, if 4 or 5 give immediate prescription.
What organism causes impetigo and which antibiotic is given?
Staph aureus
Flucloxacillin PO or topical (fusidic acid).
What is whooping cough?
also called pertussis.
Bacterial infection in infants that causes a bad cough and breathing difficulties - treated with antibiotics, needs hospital admission if child is struggling to breathe.
What is the management of slapped cheek?
Self-resolving within 3 weeks
Good hydration and analgesia.
What organism causes chickenpox?
Varicella zoster virus (type of herpes simplex virus)
What is the antibiotic of choice for acute otitis media?
Amoxicillin - only give if patient is systemically unwell or symptoms are not improving. Not everyone will need antibiotics.
What is epiglottitis?
Medical emergency where there is swelling and inflammation of ht epiglottis due to infection or injury. Can lead to stridor, hoarse voice and difficulty breathing. Needs urgent securing of the airway in hospital and antibiotics if the infection is bacterial.
What is the most common organism to cause epiglottitis?
Haemophilius influenzae
What is erythema infectiosum another name for?
Slapped cheek
What is erythema neonatorum toxicum?
Rash that affects up to half of newborns 2-5 days after birth. Cause isn’t really known but is thought to be caused by activation of the immune system. Appears as small popular lesions over the body. Completely benign.
What is laryngitis with laryngeal oedema?
Inflammation of the larynx due to irritation or infection, can present with hoarse voice, sore throat, fever and occasionally difficulty breathing, but is generally self-limiting.
What is croup?
Viral respiratory tract infection that causes a ‘barking’ cough, stridor and hoarse voice. Occasionally causes difficulty breathing but is usually self-limiting.
