What is the difference between cellulitis and erysipelas?
Cellulitis is an acute bacterial infection of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, whereas erysipelas is a much more superficial infection and only affects the epidermis and superficial lymphatics.
What strains of HPV cause genital warts?
6+11 (16+18 cause cervical cancer)
What organisms most commonly cause cellulitis?
Staph aureus
Beta haemolytic streptococcus
What organism causes erysipelas?
Streptococcus pyogenes
What antibiotic is usually given to treat erysipelas?
Benzylpenicillin or penicillin V (infection caused by strep pyogenes).
What is hand, foot and mouth?
Common infection that causes mouth ulcers and red spots on hands and feet, also associated with fever and sore throat. Self limiting and usually no treatment required.
What is Candida?
Fungal infection caused by Candida albicans, more common in patients who are immunosuppressed or on steroids. Pink and white patches usually present in the mouth, vagina or skin folds.
What is the treatment for Candida?
Topical nystatin if in the mouth.
Clotrimazole cream and pessary if in the vagina.
What is tinea?
Superficial fungal infection caused by dermatophytes, produced round scaly lesions with central clearing that can be itchy, rash can be quite infectious.
What is the treatment for tinea?
Toapical antifungals e.g. clotrimazole
What is pityriasis versicolor?
Fungal infection that causes patches of hyper or hypo pigmented skin. Most common on back of neck and trunk, treatment selenium sulphate or ketoconazole shampoos.
What is pityriasis rosea?
Viral infection that is known to have a herald patch (single oval lesion) preceding a rash. Occurs mainly on the trunk. Usually self resolving but can be treated with moisturisers and steroid creams.
What is the difference between pityriasis versicolor and rosea?
Pityarias is versicolor is a fungal infection leading to hyper or hypo pigmented skin.
Pityriasis rosea is a viral skin infection leading to a herald patch preceding a rash.
What is impetigo?
Contagious skin infection caused by staph aureus, causes a superficial rash, typically honey-coloured crusts on an erythematous base. More common on face and in children 2-5 yrs.
What is the treatment for impetigo?
Topical antibiotics if mild, flucloxacillin if more severe (causes by staph aureus).
