Give 4 indications for IS in children
Any from:
- age, must be able to sit in chair and breathe through nose with mouth open
- mild/moderate anxiety
- good management of gag reflex
- if child has mild asthma
- if treatment is needed in multiple quadrants
Give 4 contraindications to IS in children
Any from:
- age, can’t understand concept or can’t breathe through nose with mouth open
- high anxiety level
- intellectual impairments
- nasal blockage
- previous unsuccessful IS
What should you do during IS treatment with children?
Keep talking to the patient
Ensure child avoids mouth breathing
Maximum when child reports tingling or starts giggling/becomes over excited
Stop if childs ears are ringing or sore head
Give 4 indications for IV sedation in children
Any from:
- age, around 12 and above, no hard age limits
- no/mild anxiety
- helpful for children with asthma
- previous difficult dental experiences
- high volume of treatment needed
Give 4 contra-indications for IV sedation in children
Any from:
- age - children under 12
- anxiety/needle anxiety
- intellectual impairment
- psychiatric disorders
- if the child likes to monitor the dental treatment
