Paediatic Microbiology Flashcards
UTI treatment in a neonates
2 months old ●Miserable ●Temperature ●Vomiting ●Urine microscopy + for E.Coli ●Admit
E.Coli, IV cefuroxime for 7 days, oral switch to trimethoprim
What kind of antibiotic is cefuroxime
Cefuroxime, like the penicillins, is a beta-lactam antibiotic. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis.
What would grow Urinary tract infection ●2 year-old ●Complex medical history ●Pyrexia ●Increase fits ●Admitted ●Urine for MC&S ●IV antibiotics
E. Coli
If the child was on IV cefuroxime with an UTI and still unwell
Change to meropenem
What is Meropenem
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Meropenem exerts its action by penetrating bacterial cells readily and interfering with the synthesis of vital cell wall components, which leads to cell death.
