Packet Switching Flashcards
What are transmissions?
The sending of data from point A to point B.
What is Packet Switching?
A method of communication across a network where a message is broken down into small pieces which are sent separately.
What does each packet consist of?
Header and payload
What is a header?
header - this includes the sender’s and recipient’s IP addresses, the packet number, the total number of packets the message contains, plus the details of any protocols used
What is a payload
payload - this is part of the actual message itself
What does Packet Switching ensure?
Packet switching also helps to ensure messages arrive complete without slowing down a network. If the recipient finds packets are missing, it can request that just those packets are re-sent.
