Packed Cell Volume & Plasma Protein Flashcards
What does PCV/Hct stand for, and what is it?
Packed Cell Volume / Hematocrit, indicates the volume of RBCs in relation to the total blood volume at the time of collection.
What are some common errors in performing the PCV?
- Taking blood from a tube containing anticoagulant that was not re-mixed
- Misreading scale
- Increased anticoagulant will shrink cells causing false-low reading
- Sample doesn’t spin for enough time
What does the buffy coat contain?
- WBCs
- Platelets
- nRBCs
- Heartworm mircofilariae
What does a high PCV usually mean?
Splenic contraction, dehydration
What does a low PCV usually mean?
Anemias, chronic iron deficiency, anesthesia
What is TP/TS?
Plasma protein
What does low TP values usually mean?
- Protein loss through kidneys, GI tract
- Loss of lymph
- Chronic or severe blood loss
- Lack of protein production by liver
What does high TP values usually mean?
- Hemoconcentration
- Increased globulin production
What does HB or HGB mean?
Hemoglobulin
What does MCV mean?
Mean Cellular Volume, expresses average volume of individual RBC
What does MCH mean?
Mean Cellular Hemoglobulin, expresses the mass of Hb in the average RBC
What does MCHC mean?
Mean Cellular Hemoglobulin Concentration, expresses the Hb concentration in RBCs
