P9 - Motion Flashcards
What does S stand for in SUVAT?
Distance
What does U stand for in SUVAT?
Initial Velocity
What does V stand for in SUVAT?
Final Velocity
What does A stand for in SUVAT?
Acceleration
What does T stand for in SUVAT?
Time
Which equation do you use to calculate the speed of an object?
v = s/t
Which equation links Final Velocity, Initial Velocity, Acceleration and Distance?
v² - u² = 2as
Which equation links Acceleration, Initial Velocity, Final Velocity and Time?
a = v-u / t
What units is Distance in?
m (metres)
What units is Velocity in?
m/s (Metres per second)
What units is Acceleration in?
m/s² (metres per second squared)
What units is Time in?
s (seconds)
What does the gradient of a line on a distance time graph represent?
The speed
What does it mean when the line is horizontal on a distance time graph?
the object is stationary
What does it mean when the line is sloping upwards on a distance time graph?
the object is moving at a constant velocity
What is displacement?
Displacement is distance in a given direction
What is velocity?
Velocity is speed in a given direction
What is acceleration?
The rate at which an object increases in velocity
Describe the velocity of an object travelling around in a circle at a constant speed.
Although it may be travelling at a constant speed its velocity will not be constant as the direction in which it is moving is constantly changing.
What is deceleration?
The rate at which an object decreases in velocity
What is the equation that links Force, Mass and Acceleration?
F = M x A
What is the equation to find weight?
W = M x G (Weight = Mass x gravitational Field Strength)
What is Force Measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is Mass measured in?
Kilograms (KG)
What is Weight Measured in?
Newtons (N)
What is weight?
Weight is the downward force exerted by an object due to its mass and the gravitational pull of a planet
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in a substance. It is measured in kilograms
What does the gradient of a line on a velocity time graph represent?
Acceleration
What does it mean when the line is horizontal on a velocity time graph?
It is travelling at a constant speed
What does it mean when the gradient is negative on a velocity time graph?
The object is decelerating
What does the area under the line on a velocity time graph represent?
The displacement of the object
How do you find the speed of an object
travelling at increasing speed at a certain moment on a distance time graph?
You draw a tangent to the point at the moment you want to calculate the speed. You then calculate the gradient of the tangent.
