P8.2 Powering Th Flashcards
What are renewable energy sources?
Energy sources which will not run out
List some renewable energy sources
Biofuels
Solar(sun)
Tide
Wind
List some non renewable energy sources
Nuclear
Fossil fuels
What are the main energy sources for heating?
Fossil fuels
Solar power
Biofuels
What are the main energy sources for transportation?
Fossil fuels
What are the main energy sources for electricity?
Fossil fuels, wind power, wave, hydroelectric, tidal, nuclear
What are some alternatives to using fossil fuels for heating?
The sun
Heating water using solar panels
Heating house with hot water from underground in some areas
Alternatives for generating electricity?
Solar cells, turbines and generators drivers by wind or waves
Why has our use of energy sources changed?
There has been an increase in population so more electricity and fuel is used
What must be considered when deciding which energy sources to use?
Cost to set up or remove
Environmental effect
Contribution to climate change
How long it will last
What is the national grid?
The power stations, pylons, transformers, wires that make the national grid to transfer electricity
Describe how transformers are used in the national grid
Step up transformers increase voltage and decrease current. Voltage is increased so that less energy is lost through heat to the surroundings
Formula for transformers
V1 x I1 = V2 x I2
What is mains supply?
230v and 50Hz Transmitted through the national grid
It is AC
What are fuses and how do they work?
They have a wire through the middle which melts if current is too high. This breaks the circuit and protects the device form surges of electricity
