P2.2 Newtons Laws Flashcards
What is an interaction pair?
A pair of forces which act in opposite directions but have the same size. They act on different objects
Give an example of an interaction pair
The gravitational forces between you and the earth. You exert a force on the earth and the force is exerted on you by the earth
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Forces always come in pairs
What are non contact forces?
A force as a result of a field. They arise when charges, masses and magnets intersect at a distance
List some examples of non contact forces
Electrostatic, magnetic, gravity
What is a field?
A region where an electrical charge, a magnetic material or a mass experiences a force
What is a contact force?
If the force is a contact force, one object exerts a force on a second one which then exerts a force back. One or more of these objects may be deformed. The bonds between atoms behave like springs
Are forces vectors or scalars?
Vectors
What is the interaction pair for the friction between a sliding box and what produces it?
The force of the box on the surface and the force of the surface on the box
Produces by the atoms from the surfaces which interact when they slide over each other
What is the interaction pair and the mechanism that produces it of a normal contact force?
The force of the object on the ground and the force of the ground on the object.
Caused by the bonds between the particles which compress and deform
What is the interaction pair of upthrust in water and what causes it?
The force of the boat on water and water on the boat
Caused by gravity which produces liquid pressure
Why is the force of water resistance larger than air resistance?
Water is denser than air so there are more particles which collide against the surface of an object moving through water which causes more drag.
Why is a normal force a contact force?
The object still pushes down on the surface which exerts a force causing the surface to exert a force back.
What is a contact force which is parallel called?
Friction
