P8: Forces In Balance Flashcards
What is distance ?
- How far an object moves
- does not involve direction
What is displacement?
- includes boththe distance of an object moves
- measured in a striaght line from the start to the finish point of the direction of the straight line
What is magnitude?
The size of the quantity
What are scalars?
The physical quantity that have size/ magnitude but have no direction
What are vectors?
Physical quantities that have size/magnitude and direction
How to clarify a distance and displacement as scalar and vector?
Distance is a scalar quantity
Displacement is a vector quantity
What is the equation for speed?
Speed=distance/time
What is the equation for velocity?
Velocity= displacement/time
What is the equation for force?
Force= mass x acceleration
What are examples of scalar quantities?
- length
- area
- volume
- speed
- mass
- density
- pressure
- temp
- energy
What are examples of vector quantities?
- displacement
- velocity
- acceleration
- momentum
- force
- lift
- drag
- thrust
- weight
What are contact forces?
When two onjects must touch to interact
What are non-contact force?
When two objects exert a force on each other when they are not touching
What is a force?
- Forces are what make objects move
- e.g when you kick a football your foot is applying force to the ball
What is force measured in?
Newtons (N)
What happens when the forces are balanced?
The resultant force is zero
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass:
- measured of how many particles there are in your body
Weight:
- measure of the pull of gravity on your body
What is weight?
The gravitational forve with which the earth attracts the masses towards the centre
What is upthrust ?
An object partly or completely submerged in greater pressure on its bottom surface of it top surface
What is friction?
Force that resists the sliding or rolling of one solid object over another
What is air ressitance?
A kind of friction that ocurs between air and another object
What is reaction?
A force that acts in the opposite direction to an action force
What is thrust?
The force which makes an object move
What is resultant force?
Is a signle force that describes all the forces operating on an object
What is balanced forced?
If the object is stationary it will remain
What is unbalanced forced?
The force applied in one direction is greater than the force applied in the opposite direction
What is the centre of mass?
A position defined relative to an object or system of object
