20
Q

What do you need to find the centre of mass of an irregular shape?

A

You will need a retort stand, a cork with a pin in it, and a plumb line (string with weight at the bottom)

21
Q

Once you have what you need, How do you find the centre of mass of an irregular object?

A

Make two holes in the object
Hang it on the cork and pin
Hang the plum line infront of it
Mark the lines
Where the two lines intersect is the centre of gravity

22
Q

What is Newtons second law?

A

In order to make an object move from rest, the forces must be inbalanced

23
Q

What is Newtons first law (law of motion)?

A

There needs to be a resultant force to change the motion of an object

24
Q

What does the term ‘no resultant force’ mean?

A

Motion wont change

25
Q

What is Newtons third law?

A

When two objects interact with each other, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other

26
Q

What is displacement?

A

The direction in which the distance is measured

(100km in a northern direction)

27
Q

What is the equation for Moment (Nm)?

A

Moment (Nm) = Force (N) x Distance (m)

28
Q

What is the unit for Force?

A

Newtons (N)

29
Q

What is the unit for distance?

A

Metres (m)

30
Q

What is the unit for Moment?

A

Newton metres (Nm)

31
Q

What is the moment of a force?

A

The turning effect on an object

32
Q

What does thrust simply mean?

A

Someones or somethings force

33
Q

What does air resistence (drag) mean?

A

Thr friction of the air on a moving object

34
Q

If a cars resultant force is 0N and balanced what is its motion like?

A

If stationary, it wont move
If already at constant speed, it will continue

(No resultant forces means the motion cant change)

35
Q

What are some examples of Scalar Quantities?

A

Speed
Distance
Temperature
Time

36
Q

How are vectors represented on a diagram?

A

By an arrow

37
Q

What does the length of an arrow tell you about a vector?

A

The magnitude

38
Q

What dies the direction of an arrow tell you about vectors?

A

The direction of the quantity

39
Q

If two bikes are travelling at the same speed but different directions, are the velocities still the same?

A

No because they are travelling in different directions

40
Q

Is mass and weight the same thing?

A

No

41
Q

What does the term ‘weight’ refer to in physics?

A

The force acting on an object due to gravity

42
Q

What does the weight of an object depend on?

A

It depends on the gravitational field strength at the location

43
Q

What is the gravitational field strength of the earth?

A

9.8N/kg

44
Q

What is the gravitational field strength of the moon?

A

1.6N/kg

45
Q

What does 1kg mass weigh less on the moon than it does on earth?

A

The gravitational field strength on the surface of the moon is less

46
Q

How do you calculate the weight of an object?

A

Weight = Mass x gravitational field strength

47
Q

Describe the relationship between mass and weight?

A

They are directly proportional to each other

48
Q

What do levers make it easier for us to do work?

A

Levers increase the distance from the pivot at which the force is applied.
This means less force is needed to get the same moment

49
Q

What formula describes Newtons 2nd Law about Resultant force?

A

Resultant force = mass x acceleration
