P8 Flashcards
What is displacement?
Distance without a change of direction or distance in a certain direction.
What are vectors?
Physical quantities that have direction, for example acceleration, force, momentum, weight, gravitational field strength.
What are scalars?
Physical quantities that have size but no specific direction, for example speed distance time mass energy and power.
What is magnitude?
It is the size of a quantity.
A vector quantity has a magnitude and direction, where is a scalar quantity only has a magnitude.
What does the direction of the arrow show?
The direction of the vector quantity.
What does the length of the arrow show?
The magnitude of the vector quantity.
What is a force?
A push or pull that acts on an object because of its interaction with another object.
What are Contacts forses?
If two objects must touch each other to interact.
What are some examples of contact forces?
Friction, air resistance, stretching forces ( tension ) and normal contact forces.
What examples of noncontact forces?
Magnetic force, electrostatic force, and the force of gravity.
What does Newton’s third law of motion state?
That when to objects interact with each other, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
What is the driving force of the car and how does it make it move?
It is the force that makes it move this is called engine force all the motive force. It pushes the car forward because there is friction between the ground and the tire of each drive wheel. When the car moves forward:
The force of the friction of the road on the tire is in the forward direction.
The force of the friction of the tyre on the road is in the reverse direction.
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
It states that if the forces acting on an object are balanced, The resultant force will be zero on the object, and if the object is at rest it stays stationary. If the object is moving, it keeps moving with the same speed and in the same direction. If only two forces acting on an object with zero resultant force, the forces must be equal on each other and acting in opposite directions.
What is a free body diagram?
It shows the forces acting on an object, without any other objects or forces shown. Each force on the diagram is shown by the vector.
What is the centre of mass?
The point at which its mass can be thought of as being concentrated.
