P8 Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
A quantity that only has a magnitude
What is a vector quantity?
A quantity that has both a magnitude and direction
Give three examples of contact forces?
Friction
Air resistance
Tension
Give three examples of non-contact forces?
Gravitional force
Electrostatic force
Mgnetic force
Is force a vector or scalar?
Vector as it has both magnititude and direction
Give three examples pf vector quantities?
Velocity
Displacement
Force
Gove three examples of scalar quantities?
Temp Time Mass Speed Distance Energy
What is weight?
Force that acts on an object due to gravity and the objects mass
What occurs when work is done against frictional forces?
A rise in temperature pf the object pccurs
Kinetic eneegy is converted to heat
Why does air resistance slow down a projectile.
The object does work against the air resistance
Kinetic energy is converted in to heat
What is newtons third Law of motion?
States that when two objects interact with each other, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
What is newtons first law of motion?
States that if the forces acting on an object are balanced, the resultant force on the object is zero
What is the equation used to caculate the moment of a force?
Moment = force x distance
Describe the moment and speed of a largergear being driven by a smaller gear?
The larger wheel will rotate more slwoly but will also produce a larger moment
How can the moment of a force increase?
Increase the size of the force
Using a spanner with a longer handle
