P3 Flashcards
Advantages of fossil fuels?
Reliable
Short start-up time
Cheaper than renewable resources
Disadvantages of fosill fuels?
Causes pollution and acid rain
They are non-renewable
Fuel costs rise up in price
What is a biofuel?
Fuel taken from living or recently living organisms
What is a nuclear fuel?
Energy taken from atoms
Examples of nuclear fuels?
Uranium and plutonium
Explain the enviromental impacts of burning fossil fuels?
Contributes to the greenhouse effect and causes global warming
Sulphur dioxide leads to acid rain, which damages crops and buildings
State 3 disadvantages of nuclear power?
Produces nuclear waste whoch is harmful
Non-renewable
Risk of nuclear accidents, which are bad for humans and the enviroment
How does hydroelectric power produce energy?
1) Rainwater collects behind a dam
2) when this water is released, it turns a turbine
3) this turbine turns a generator which produces electricity
Disadvantages of using biofuels?
When plants are burned or decay they release Co2
Destroys land in order to grow biofuels - land could have been habitats
Reduces available space for growing food
What are advantages pf tidal energy sources?
Do not produce greenhouse gases
Quite reliable
Cheap to run as tides are natural
What are disadvantages of hydroelectric power?
Dam may cause flooding
Expensive to build
Causes a loss of habitats
What are advantages of solar panels?
They are renewable
They dont cause harm to the enviroment
Can be used in remote areas
Factors that could be off putting when optimg for a certain type of energy production?
Visual pollution
Sound pollution
Smell
Disadvanatges pf wind turbines?
They are visually unattrive
They produce lots of sound, therefore very noisy
They take up a lot of land space
What are disavantages of solar panels?
Not reliable (mot always sunny in the uk)
Very expensive, takes a long time to make your money back
Generates electricity on a small scale
