P7 - Radioactivity Flashcards
What is the acronym for remembering the chemists who made discoveries about the model of the atom?
Don’t - Dalton
Try - Thompson
Remembering - Rutherford
Brilliant - Bohr
Chemists - Chadwick
What are helium nuclei?
Alpha particles
What is alpha radiation?
When an alpha particle is emitted from the nucleus
What is an alpha particle made of?
Two neutrons and two protons
What is alpha radiation absorbed by?
A sheet of paper (doesn’t penetrate very far into materials)
What is alpha radiations ionising power? Why?
High due to their size
What is a beta particle/radiation?
A high speed electron
What’s the charge of an alpha particle?
+2
What’s the charge of a beta particle?
-1
How ionising is a beta particle?
Medium/moderately ionising
What is an alpha particles range in air?
Around 5cm
What is a beta particles range in air?
A few metres
What is a gamma particles range in air?
Infinite
What are beta particles absorbed by?
Thin aluminium (they penetrate moderately far into materials before colliding)
What is a gamma particle?
Waves of electromagnetic radiation released by the nucleus
