P6 - Molecules And Matter Flashcards
What is latent heat?
The energy needed for a substance to change state, the energy supplied changes the internal energy but not the temperature
What is specific latent heat?
The amount of energy needed to change the state of 1 kilogram of a substance with no change in temperature.
What is internal energy?
Energy is stored inside a system by the particles that make up the system
How are particles arranged in a solid?
Particles are arranged in rows and vibrate about a fixed position
How are particles arranged in a liquid?
Particles are closely packed but not arranged in rows
How are particles arranged in a gas?
Particles are in constant random motion
How does increasing temperature affect the particle model?
• kinetic energy of the particles is higher —> particles move faster
• at a constant volume, pressure also increases due to particles moving faster and therefore colliding with the walls more often
What happens to mass in a change of state?
Mass is conserved
What kind of change is a change of state? Why?
• physical change
• the material recovers its original properties if the change is reversed
