Electromagnet
How to create a electromagnet
When a current is passed through the wire it creates a magnetic field around the wire. This strongly magnetises the iron bar, therefore creating the electromagnet.
Ways to change the strength of the Electromagnet
- change the current
- change the number of times the coil is wrapped arounf the iron core
Flemmings left hand rule
Thumb= motion (force)
First Finger= electromagnetic field
Second finger= current
The force is greatest when…
the wire is perpendicular with the magnetic field lines
The force is 0 when…
the wire and the magnetic field lines are parallel
magnetic flux density is?
The amount of magnetic flux in a certain area
Equation for magnetic flux density
Force= magnetic flux density x current x length
F= BIL
