P3.1- Static And Charge Flashcards
What is charge
It is a property of matter
How do you produce static electricity?
When you rub two insulators together you transfer electrons from one insulator to the other
One object ends up with extra electrons and the other with not enough electrons to cancel out the positive charge
The charge on each object is what we call static electricity
How do you discharge an object (remove the charge)?
Connect it to something that allows charge to flow
Sparks also discharge charged objects
What is a spark
A flow of charge (or a current) through the air
What is a gravitational field?
A region around a mass where another mass experiences a force
What is an electric field
An area produced by charged particles where charged particles of objects feel a force
How can you change the shape of a field line?
By putting another charged object in the field
How can you find the force on an object from the field lines
The force on an object will be in the direction that causes the field lines to shorten and straighten
The direction of the field lines is the direction of the force on a positive charge
Do field lines go from positive to negative or negative to positive
Positive to negative
What is current
The rate of flow of charge
What do you need to make a current flow
A cell or a battery or a power supply as well as a complete circuit
What is conventional current
A mode, where current goes from positive to negative terminal of the battery
What is electron flow
Going from the negative to positive terminal of the battery
How do you calculate charge flow
Charge (C) = current (A) ✖️time(s)
What is 1 milliamp in amps (standard form)
1 ✖️ 10^-3
