P3.1 Flashcards
What is charge?
A property of matter, things can be neutral, positive and negative
How do you produce static electricity?
Rub 2 insulators together e.g rod and cloth, and electrons will transfer from one to another causing them to become positively and negatively charged
Why does a negatively charged balloon attract water?
The balloon repels electrons in the water,so the water closest to the balloon is positively charged and they attract
Why cant metals produce static electricity?
Metals allow charge to flow
What direction do electric field lines travel
They leave at positive and enter at negative
Straight lines out and in
Explain using electric fields why like charges repel and unlike charges attract
All charged particles have an electric field around them.
If you put another charged particle in the field it will either attract or repel
If it attracts the field lines will shorten and join together
If it repels the field lines will distort outwards and straighten up
What is current?
The rate of flow of charged particles or charge
What are the conditions for a current to flow?
You need a cell or a battery (power supply) and a complete circuit
What is the difference between conventional current and electron flow?
Electron flow is negative to positive, but when we draw current on a circuit we draw from positive to negative (conventional current)
What is the equation for charge?
Charge = current x time
What is charge measured in?
Coulombs
What is current measured in?
Amperes (or amps)
What is potential difference?
The energy in a charge, a difference in potential produced by the separation of charge
What is resistance?
A measure of how easy it is for current to flow
What is resistance measured in?
Ohms (greek omega)
