P1.2 Flashcards
What is density?
How much mass there is in a certain volume
What is the equation for density (w/ usual units)
mass(kg)/ volume (m3)
What affects whether a particle sinks or floats
If it is denser than the thing it is sinking/floating in
Why are gases less dense than solids
Particles are further apart
Conservation of mass
Mass cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred/changed
How to convert between temperature and kelvin
C + 273 = k
What is the unit for energy
Joules(J)
What is temperature a measure of
Average kinetic energy of particles
Why do sparks touching you not burn?
They are hot but very small so very little energy to burn you
What is SHC
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a material by 1 degree celcius
SHC unit
Joules per kilogram celcius/kelvin
SHC equation
E = mc0 (0 is theta)
Can be rearranged to c = E/m0
What does SHC tell you about the material
How resistant it is to changes in temperature
Uses of materials with different SHCs
Low SHC - e.g saucepans so they can heat up quickly
High SHC - e.g water is resistant so is used in heating systems
Why does temperature not change during state changes
The energy is all going to breaking/making forces between molecules
