Work is the transfer of energy by a force , because we applied a force to the gas, we have transferred energy to the gas particles
We have increased the internal energy of the gas. Internal energy includes both the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the gas particles
The temperature of a gas is related to the average kinetic energy of the particles
Because we have increased the kinetic energy of the gas particles, we have increased the temperature of the gas
