P3 : Required Practical 5 Density Flashcards
Regular objects
Regular objects have dimensions which are easy to measure eg with a ruler
Irregular objects
With irregular objects, we cannot easily measure their dimensions
How do we calculate density of regular objects
. First, determine mass with a balance
. To work out volume, we use a ruler to measure the length of the side
. The volume is length x width x height
. Then divide mass by volume
How do we calculate density of irregular objects
. Find the mass of the object using a balance
. Fill Eureka can with water
. Place object into the water, this will cause the water to be displaced and flow out of the can through the spout
. Measure volume of water displaced. This volume is the same volume as the volume of the object
. Divide mass by volume
