P3 - Series and Parallel Circuits Flashcards
Describe a series circuit?
In a series circuit all the components are in a line
Describe a parallel circuit
In a parallel circuit each branch of the component is separately connected to the positive and negative terminals of the supply
If you have 3 x 1.5V Batteries in series what would the total voltage be?
1.5V x 3 = 7.5V
If you have 3 x 5V batteries in parallel what is the total potential difference?
5V
If the potential difference (p.d.) of component 1 is 5V and the p.d. of component 2 is 7V, what is the total supply p.d. required if the circuit is in series?
In a series circuit the supply p.d. is equal to the total demand of the components.
V = V1 + V2
5 + 7 = 12V
In a series circuit what is the value of the current at two given places?
In a series circuit the current will be the same anywhere in the circuit.
What is the total (net) resistance of a circuit containing 3 x 2ohm resistors?
R = R1 + R2 + R3
Therefore
2+2+2=6ohm
Or
3 x 2 = 6ohm
