P3: Particle Model Of Matter Flashcards
What does density mean?
How compact the particles are.
What is internal energy?
Energy stored by particles in a certain mass that make up a system.
Why is it flat on a graph when a substance is changing state?
The energy is being used to break the intermolecular bonds rather than changing the temperature.
What is specific latent heat?
The energy needed to change the state of 1kg of mass.
What is the specific latent heat called between a solid and a liquid?
Specific latent heat of fusion.
What is the specific latent heat called between a liquid and a gas?
Specific latent heat of vaporisation.
What causes pressure in a gas?
Colliding particles into the side of a container.
What happens to a gas when volume increases?
Pressure decreases.
Why does doing work on a gas increase temperature?
Eg. A bike pump
Kinetic energy using a foot transfers energy to the particles inside the tyre making the temperature increase.
