P1: Energy Flashcards
What is a system?
A single or group of objects you are interested in.
What is a closed system?
Where matter or energy cannot enter or leave.
What is energy measured in?
Joules (J)
What is the definition of specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy needed to raise 1kg if a substance by 1degree.
What is dissipated energy?
Wasted energy.
What is power?
The rate of doing work.
The equation linking power, energy transferred and time.
E = PT
What is conduction?
Vibrating particles transferring energy to neighbouring particles.
What is thermal conductivity?
How quickly energy is transferred through a material.
What is convection?
When particles move away from a hotter to cooler region.
Why does warm air rise?
Because it is less dense.
How can you adapt a house so minimum energy is lost?
Thick Walls, Cavity Walls (gap in between 2), loft insulation, double glazed windows, draught excluders.
What elements are needed for nuclear fuel?
Uranium and platinum.
Where do fossil fuels come from?
The ground, natural resource, form underground over millions of years.
Where does Hydroelectric power come from?
Flooding of a valley by building a dam.
What are the negative impacts of HEP?
Rots vegetation producing carbon dioxide and methane.
Where do biofuels come from?
Plants and waste (poo).
What is geothermal power?
Heating up water around hot rocks, volcanic areas underground.
Why is sulphur dioxide bad for the environment?
Causes acid rain - bad for soil and trees.
What is the UK’s target for the use of renewable energy?
By 2020, the yearly energy use with be 15% renewable.
