P3 - Forces and motion Flashcards
What is the formula for force?
Force = mass X acceleration.
If a car has a mass of 1000kg, what is the force needed to give it an acceleration of 4m/s^2?
Force = mass X acceleration
1000 X 4 = 4000N
What causes a constant speed?
When the forces acting on an object are balanced.
What is the unbalanced force equal to?
The forward force - the backward force.
What is thinking time?
The time taken for a driver to react to danger.
What is braking distance?
Braking distance is the distance travelled before the car comes to a stop after breaks have been applied.
What is stopping distance?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
If thinking distance is 2m and the breaking distance is 6m, what is the stopping distance?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
2 + 6 = 8m
What can affect thinking time?
- tiredness
- under influence of drugs and alcohol
- distractions
What can affect braking distance?
- road conditions
- quality of breaks
- speed of car
