P3 Flashcards
Atoms overall charge
Atoms have no overall charge, this is because the number of protons is the same as the number of electrons
Size of an atom
0.1-0.5 nm
Proton, neutron, electron
Location, mass, charge
Proton
Nucleus, 1 , +1
Neutron
Nucleus, 1 , 0
Electron
Shells, very small , -1
On the periodic table which is the mass number which is the atomic number
The mass number is always the bigger number
Atomic number tells you
The number of protons which is also the number of electrons
The mass number tells you
Protons + neutrons
What is an ion
And ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons
What are isotopes
Isotopes have a different number of neutrons
They have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
The model of the atom overtime
Dalton Thomson Rutherford Bohr Chadwick
Daltons model
The idea that atoms are individual spheres
Thomson’s model
Thomson’s plum pudding model
Discovered the electrons
Rutherford’s
Nuclear model
Discovered the majority of the atom is made of empty space
Bohrs model
Bohrs modern model
Discovered electrons orbiting the nucleus
James Chadwick
Discovered neutrons
