P3 Flashcards
what is biofuel
-used instead of fossil fuels
-evergy from living or recently living organisms
-renewable - used at same rate it is being replaced
-carbon beural
what is nuclear power
-every relaased from the nucleus.
what are energy resources used for
-electricity generation
-transport
-heating
increasing population =evergy demands
wind power - turbines
-force of wind drives turbine around this then turns a generator
-the power generated increased with wind speed
-unreliable depending on location and weather—>could also effect birds
wave power
-uses waves to make a floating generator move up and down
-this motion turns it so it generates electricity
-a cable between the shoreline and the generator delivers the electricity to the grid system
-need to withstand storms and don’t have a constant supply of energy
-they can disrupt flow patterns effecting wildlife
hydroelectric power
-electricity can be generated by rain collected in a reservoir flowing downhil
-the flowing water drives turbines that turn generators at the bottom of the hill
-flooding effects habitats
-
tidal power
-traps water from each high tide behind a barrage and uses it to turn generators
what is a solar cell
-they can convert coke of the solar energy they absord back into electricity
-connect to make solar panels
-expensive but cost nothing to run
-unreliable where sun is often not out
-need large land-effect wildlife
what is solar heatinf
-heats water that flows thru it
-this can be used to heat homes -in floor heating
what is geothermal energy
-all every stores beneath the surface of earth
-can be built in volcanic areas
-water gets pumped down to rocky areas to produce steam
-then the steam that is produced drives turbines
-can be used to heat water in underground pipes
what types of energy are solar cells solar heating and geothermal energy
-renewable
why do fossil fuels create climate change
-increase levels of greenhouse gases
advantages of nuclear power
-reliable
-does not produce pollinating gases
-more energy is transferred
disadvantages of nuclear power
-produced radioactive waste
-an accident could be very bad
best emitters of infrared radiation have what surfaces
dark matte
the worst emitters of infrared radiation have what surfaces
light shiny
what are microwaves used for
not absorbed by water droplets
-communication—sattalites
are absorbed by water
-in microwaves—water in food anorbs energy
what is infrared radiation
-emitted from all objects that have thermal energy
uses of infrared radiation
-infrared camera—-seeing living organisms in the dark
-cooking—by heating oven grills they emit loads of infrared radiation=heatinf food—>cooked
-electric heaters—heats metal of heater it emits this radiation to aurroundubgs
