P3 Flashcards
What is the operation for a operation of a fossil fuel burning power station ?
Burn coal or oil to create heat which is in turn used to generate steam to drive turbines which generate electricity
What is the operation for a nuclear power station ?
Fuel (usually uranium or plutonium ) goes through a chain reaction to produce heat the steam drives the turbine into kinetic energy. This then produces the electical energy
Why are biofuels considered carbon neutral ?
The carbon that living organism takes into the atmospher as carbon dioxide can balance the amount that is released when the biofuel is burnt
Compare the difference between fosil fuels ans nucler fuel? Waste ? Pollution ? Energy provided ?
Nuclears fuel is uranium or plutonium
Fosil fuels is coal,oil,gas
Energy released per kg of fuel N = 300000MJ FF = 30mj
Waster for N is radoiactive waste that needs to be stored for years and for e is no radoiactive waste
N has no greenhouse gasses because the energy is released without burning F releases greenhouse gasses when they burn
What are some of the problems wirh biofuels ?
They lead to an increase in pollution
Can lead to deforestation
What is the opperation for a wind turbine ?
Is an electricity generator at the too of a narrow tower the wind turnes the blades around this turns the generator the power then comes from the kinetic energy the more wind the more power
What is the operation of a hydroelectric system ?
When rainwater is collected in a reservoir flows into a turbine to turn into electricity
What is the operation of a solar power tower ?
It uses thouands of mirros to reflect on to a big tank of water this in turns heats up the tank and creates steam it then turns the turbines to create electrity
What is the difference between a solar cell panel and a solar heating pannel
A heating pannel is used to heat water whereas as a solar cell panel is used to make electrcity
What is a geothermal power station ?
It is built in volcanic areas. Where water is pumped into hot rocks deep below the surface the rocks produce steam that drives electricity turbines at the ground
What is acid rain ?
Any form of rain that has acid componets in them such as sulfuric acid or nitric acid
Wht are the effects of climate change ?
Thw effects of climate change can be
More frequent and intense drought, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans
What are some techniques to reduce harmful products in fosil fuels
You can remove the sulfur or harmful acids before burning them
Compare nuclear and renewable resources. Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages for nuclear power No greenhouse gasses Much more energy than rewnable Disadvantages They contain radioactive waste and if an accident happened it release material and this would effect the area
Advantages for renwable
Will never run out
Don’t create radioactive waste proucts
No acid rain or greenhouse gasses
Disadvantages
They can’t meet the demand currently for the world
They can be unreliable
Explain why some renwable energys sources are turned on and off
An example is solar panels as in the winter there is litlle sun or when its is night
Winds/waves can be to week on some days
